Global Standards Mapping Initiative (GSMI)

Taxonomy

Common language is fundamental for collaboration and continued developments in the blockchain space. This GSMI working group has built a landscape of 350 terms and existing definitions from global standards bodies and other international and industry-specific entities, which it continues to update. The purpose is to foster harmonized vocabulary, particularly at the regulatory level, and ultimately promote collaboration and growth. The GSMI 6.0 Taxonomy working group incorporates and aligns with GBBC’s work with the U.S. CFTC on digital asset taxonomy and categorization.

Technical Standards

Blockchain technology, as any other innovation, relies on common standards to ensure proper functioning and growth, where common rules can facilitate global cooperation and scale. This working group assesses existing technical standards developments and sectors of focus for responsible growth and continued innovation, updating a crowdsourced list of 63 bodies advancing technical standards in the blockchain and digital assets space and categorizing them based on their intended outcome focused on technical issues, regulatory compliance, or conduct/governance.

Supply Chain & Critical Minerals

Blockchain technology is promising for global trade, which often relies on cumbersome and inefficient processes, by providing authenticity and provenance. This working group focuses on supply chains for critical minerals utilized for the most essential products that humanity relies on. The group explores blockchain and AI solutions to meet global sustainable management guidelines, in addition to a commentary on: company needs (featuring selected jurisdictions like DRC), the role of other stakeholders and government, and recommendations for sustainable and transparent supply chains for critical minerals.

Digital Identity & Privacy

Blockchain can enable models of self-sovereign identity, expanding access to undeserved communities while improving privacy and security of personal data. This working group evaluates the role of blockchain to establish identity systems that can benefit economies and societies, particularly with an interest in privacy preserving tools. This working group assesses global standards for identity, self-sovereign ownership models, and novel issues presented by innovative privacy preserving approaches.
